Sunday, September, 14, 2008 Field Outing Hawkwatch

Contact Tin Mountain for directions or more info. 603-447-6991. We will meet in Fryeburg at Fryeburg Academy (parking lot beside main building) at 8AM to carpool or at the trailhead at 8:45AM. This year we will be watching from Hawk Mountain in South Waterford, Maine. It's a great site that in the past has proven to be productive! Chris' cell phone: 603-662-8801

With the winds of Autumn come the migration of our magnificent birds of prey as they make their way south to pass the winter months. In this field outing, Chris Lewey will lead us in watching for and identifying these hunters of the sky. There will be a short hike involved to the watch site.
Directions to Hawk Mountain, South Waterford, Maine (owned by town of Waterford) north of Bridgton, Maine.

From Fryeburg take Route 302 to Bridgton
Drive through downtown Bridgton to intersection (Big Kahuna bar on left), leave route 302 and take sharp left onto Rt. 117 (Harrison Road)
Take Rt.117 north to North Bridgton (~2mi?) and then bare left onto Rt. 37 (No. Bridgton Rd)
Continue north about 3 miles and rt. 35 will join rt.37 at the southern end of Bear Pond (the cliffs of Hawk Mt. will be visible to the East.
Continue on rt. 37 and rt. 35 with Bear Pond on left (~1mi?) to South Waterford.
Take right onto Mill Hill Road (this is just before Sweden Road which goes off to the left and eventually would bring you into Lovell) (If you get to Keoka Lake on right you have gone too far.)
Continue on Mill Hill Road (less than 1/2 mile) to Hawk Mountain Road on right (sign is hard to see). Take right onto Hawk Mt. Road. Continue to trailhead on right at a logging road, just at the end of the paving.
Trail proceeds in a southerly direction for about 1/2 mile, fire pit at top and then trail continues short distance down toward top of cliffs and open views to the south. Roundtrip an easy hike of about 1 mile.
